Laredo Medical Center to host Convalescent Plasma Drive Sept. 26-27
9/10/2020
Laredo Medical Center is joining a community effort led by the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center to encourage Laredoans to donate convalescent plasma and provide hope in the battle against COVID-19.
The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center and Laredo Medical Center will host an appointment-only convalescent plasma drive on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the hospital’s main campus, located at 1700 E. Saunders Street. The mobile unit will be located near the flags and pond at the hospital.
Potential donors are encouraged to find out if they can donate by emailing Covid19_LBK@southtexasblood.org or by calling (210) 731-5514.
All donors must make an appointment and be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before donating.
Recovered patients who meet these criteria along with all FDA requirements for blood and plasma donation must first contact the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center before donating.
Potential donors must be completely free of symptoms for 14 days prior to donation.
The average convalescent plasma donation provides enough for three doses, and a donor can give every four days. The donation process takes between 60-90 minutes.
To encourage South Texans who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate convalescent plasma, Carabin Shaw PC and Wyatt Law Firm PLLC are providing each donor a $50 Visa gift card while supplies last.
The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is the only organization in this area collecting convalescent plasma that can be transfused directly to patients with COVID-19.
The community blood center has supplied more than 6,000 doses of convalescent plasma to patients across South Texas hospitals. The center needs 75 donors a day to meet hospital needs but is averaging just 40 a day.
