Laredo Medical Center to Host 2nd Annual Breastfeeding Awareness Community Fair, August 6
8/1/2019
Laredo Medical Center invites moms, dads and families to the second annual Breastfeeding Awareness Community Fair on Tuesday, August 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the foyer of the hospital’s main entrance.
The local effort to support breastfeeding is part of National Breastfeeding Month in August and commemorates the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action’s theme of “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding” to help raise awareness of the important contributions moms and dads make as members of the breastfeeding team.
County and city leaders will help kick off the community fair at 10 a.m. with proclamations to declare August as National Breastfeeding Month.
Laredo Medical Center’s Certified Lactation Counselor and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant will offer an array of information about breastfeeding to help moms and dads reach their goals and give their babies the best possible start in life. Moms will also be able to join LMC’s “Breast Friends” breastfeeding support group, which meets every first Monday of the month at 1 p.m.
The community fair will also feature several programs from the Laredo Health Department, including WIC, Nurse-Family Partnership, and Zika Healthcare. Other partner organizations include Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN) and Gateway Community Health Center. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from Webb County Constable Precinct 1 will offer car seat safety education for parents.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding is the standard for infant feeding. It provides essential nutrients and antibodies that boost an infant’s immune system, providing protection from childhood illnesses.
Babies who are not breastfed are more likely to develop chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and cancer.
Breastfeeding is important for mothers, too. Women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.
