LAREDO, TX — Laredo Medical Center has donated 15 touchscreen tablet PCs to the Laredo Fire Department EMS to implement a new mobile app to enhance communication and improve outcomes for trauma patients.
The tablet PC donation was presented by Laredo Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jorge Leal and members of the hospital’s emergency department to Laredo Fire Department Chief Guillermo Heard and members of his EMS team on Friday, September 8 at the hospital’s main campus.
“About 90 percent of the trauma patients treated at Laredo Medical Center are transported by the Laredo Fire Department EMS,” says Leal. “With this donation and the implementation of the mobile technology, Laredo Medical Center will be able to effectively and efficiently streamline the triage process from the first moment of patient contact by EMS through the continuum of care at our hospital.”
Leal adds that Laredo Medical Center is the first hospital in Laredo and Webb County to implement the communication technology for the benefit of their patients.
The mobile app will simplify communication for mass casualty and patient incidents for faster triage, patient tracking and management of incidents—all in one platform. The app will provide a unified patient channel between Laredo Medical Center and EMS units, replacing phone calls, radio reports, faxes and pagers.
With this single centralized platform, EMS will be able to securely send real-time data to emergency department staff at Laredo Medical Center via audio, live video and instant messaging.
The mobile technology meets all federal standards to protect sensitive patient health information and the hospital’s accreditation requirements for patients suffering a trauma, heart attack, stroke or sepsis.
Laredo Medical Center is an Advanced Level III Trauma Facility and the lead trauma facility in Laredo that treated 52,400 ER patients in 2022.
