From Detection to Treatments, Laredo Medical Center Offers a One-Stop Comprehensive Cancer Center
10/7/2022
For over a decade, the A.R. Sanchez Cancer Center at Laredo Medical Center has given hope and life to thousands of patients. Home to advanced technology and some of the most respected oncologists in South Texas, the cancer center offers quality cancer patient care – from detection to treatments – in a one-stop cancer center.
Digital Mammography
Laredo Medical Center offers 3D mammography exams where breast tomosynthesis technology is utilized to increase the detection of breast cancers, and decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing.
In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to callbacks.
A 3D mammography exam includes a tomosynthesis scan that can reduce the tissue overlap effect. During the tomosynthesis portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A 3D mammography exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.
The 3D mammography exam is changing how breast cancer is detected by providing an option for women of all breast densities compared to 2D alone. The 3D mammography exams are available at LMC North and LMC South.
During the months of October and November, Laredo Medical Center is offering a special 3D mammography rate of $99. For more information or to make an appointment, call (956) 796-3729. To find a primary care doctor, visit https://bit.ly/3f3oR68.
All digital mammography units at LMC are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
LMC Infusion Center
The new and expanded LMC Infusion Center provides patient care excellence in a comfortable and convenient outpatient setting for those who require chemotherapy and hydration therapy, as well as other infusion services, provided by certified registered nurses who specialize in chemotherapy, intravenous therapy and hydration.
Hospital officials celebrated the opening of the new facilities last year in September.
“The entire oncology staff is so proud of our beautiful new Infusion Center and what it means for our patients,” says Mohsen G. Mahani, M.D., medical oncologist and medical director of the LMC Infusion Center. “Expanding this service is exactly what the cancer program at LMC needed in order to provide more comprehensive, compassionate and quality cancer services in Laredo, sparing anyone the added expense and inconvenience of traveling out of town.”
When patients arrive at the LMC Infusion Center, they’ll notice it has been designed with many amenities. Patients will receive their infusion in one of 14 comfortable recliner chairs available. They can choose to enjoy television by watching any of the flat screen TVs, which are accompanied by private headphones, or enjoy their own personal electronic device by using LMC’s free Wi-Fi access.
Four private patient rooms are also available for those needing extra privacy and added comfort, with the goal of each nurse to ensure each patient feels as comfortable as possible. Nurses will be there to tend to the needs of all patients during their visits.
Radiation Therapy
Laredo Medical Center also offers cancer patients radiation therapy, which uses noninvasive tumor-destroying radiation to treat cancers throughout the body as it minimizes exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. It performs many advanced forms of radiotherapy, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy and radiotherapy.
“We can select the optimal treatment for every type of cancer,” said Radiation Oncologist Manuel A. Jovel, M.D. “This technology allows us to offer a wider spectrum of advanced radiotherapy treatment options to many more patients. It represents a quantum leap in our ability to help people fight cancer.”
Furthermore, the system is able to combine new imaging and motion management technologies which will compensate for tumor motion (both external and internal). This technology opens the door to possibilities for the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck, as well as other cancers that are treatable with radiation.
