Sports Physicals Offer Benefits for Child’s Health
8/3/2020
Laredo CareClinic is now offering sports physical exams, which are a requirement for student athletes, cheerleaders, band members and students in other organizations. But, having an annual physical is an important part of a child’s health and development, even if your child isn’t involved in a student organization.
Annual physicals help recognize developing medical issues before they become serious. One example of this is eyesight. Time and again, research has linked poor eyesight with poor performance in the classroom. If left unaddressed, common eye problems that could be easily corrected with glasses or contacts may result in poor grades and classroom frustration.
Another important factor of a physical is to make sure parents are familiar with their child’s health history. This way, if the child is admitted to the hospital, the physicians will have valuable insight and supporting medical records that may lead to more informed treatment decisions.
There are several things parents can do to make the annual sports physical more productive. It’s a good idea to sit down with your child and prepare a list of questions on topics ranging from nutrition to sports injury prevention. This preparation may also give your child the opportunity to think of questions they want to ask the practitioner in private.
An annual physical exam can be a beneficial visit for you and your child. Be sure to include it as part of your wellness routine each year.
Laredo CareClinic is now offering Sports Physicals for $25. It also is offering the TB test for $20.
Parents should bring their child’s physical form with the health history section completed and signed. For those who don’t have the form, they can obtain it at the clinic.
In addition, students should bring their prescribed eye glasses or contact lenses, and, if applicable, a clearance letter from their doctor for patients with heart problems, surgeries or fractures within the past year.
Affiliated with Laredo Medical Center, Laredo CareClinic is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. The facility is located at 10201 McPherson, Suite 300 (across from United Day School).
Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are also accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Everyone who enters the clinic will be expected to wear a mask and will be screened for symptoms, which includes temperature checks. Social distancing is also enforced.
