Nurses at the Heart of Care: National Nurses Week 2026

By: Christine Martinez, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer, Laredo Medical Center
National Nurses Week is a chance for our community to pause and recognize something that is true every day: nurses are at the heart of healthcare.
This year’s theme highlights resilience, innovation, and leadership. Those ideas are not abstract in a hospital setting—they show up in real, visible ways. Nurses are often the first to notice when a patient’s condition changes. They coordinate care among multiple providers, support families through difficult moments, and help deliver care grounded in both clinical excellence and compassion.
Healthcare has become more complex in recent years, and the role of nurses has evolved along with it. Today’s nurses are not only caregivers at the bedside but also problem-solvers, educators and leaders. They help design safer systems, improve care processes, and contribute to new approaches such as virtual care and technology-supported decision-making.
At Laredo Medical Center, we see the impact of nursing every day. Improvements in patient safety, well-coordinated care, and better patient experiences are closely tied to the skill and vigilance of our nursing teams. That focus on safety is reflected in our hospital earning an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Spring 2026, a recognition that highlights our ongoing commitment to protecting patients from harm.
Creating an environment where nurses can thrive is essential to these outcomes. This commitment is further reflected in Laredo Medical Center being named by Becker’s Healthcare as a Top Place to Work in Healthcare for two consecutive years, 2025 and 2026—an honor that underscores our focus on supporting our people as the foundation of high-quality care.
To the nurses serving our community: your work makes a difference in ways both seen and unseen. You bring skill, judgment, and humanity to every interaction, and our hospital—and our community—is stronger because of you.
This week, we recognize and thank you. Moving forward, we remain committed to supporting you—because great healthcare begins with great nursing.
