LMC, UIW Internal Medicine Residents Attend

Eight internal medicine residents from the Laredo Medical Center (LMC) and University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Primary Care Residency Program recently attended conferences at the state and national levels, where they had the opportunity to present scholarly activity as part of their residency experience. Residents Joseph Caravella, DO, Joshua Hernandez, DO, Tiffany Prachachalerm, DO, Greg Puchala, DO, and Nathaniel Staley, DO, attended the Annual Meeting of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians from October 25-27 in San Antonio. They were accompanied by Dr. Grace McNutt, Program Director for the LMC and UIW Internal Medicine Residency Program and Dr. Julio P. Zavala, Internal Medicine Faculty member. Caravella presented “A Sense of Detachment in a Patient with Urothelial Cell Carcinoma.” Drs. Stephen McNutt and Julio Zavala are his Internal Medicine Faculty co-authors and mentors. Hernandez presented “A Tale Not Told In Blood: The Hidden Pathophysiology of Glomerulonephritis.” Drs. Grace McNutt and Julio Zavala are his Internal Medicine Faculty co-authors and mentors. Prachachalerm and Puchala presented “Proliferative Glomerulonephritis with Monoclanal IgG3 Kappa light chain deposits successfully treated with steroid monotherapy.” Drs. Grace McNutt and Julio Zavala are their Internal Medicine Faculty co-authors and mentors. Staley presented “A Case of Mixed Cryoglobulinemia Syndrome Presenting with Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis in a Patient with Cocaine Abuse, Hepatitis C Infection and Connective Tissue Disease.” Drs. Grace McNutt and Julio Zavala are his Internal Medicine Faculty co-authors and mentors. Residents Armando Cardenas, MD, Eric Spicuzza, DO, and Syed Zaidi, DO, attended the 2019 Annual Convention and Scientific Sessions of the American College of Osteopathic Internists from October 30-November 3 in Phoenix, Arizona. They were accompanied by Drs. Grace McNutt and Thomas Mohr, Associate Dean-GME. Zaidi and Cardenas presented “Emesis as the First Presenting Symptom of Von Hippel-Lindau Disease.” Dr. Selena Stuart is their Internal Medicine Faculty co-author and mentor.
Spicuzza presented “Concurrent ALECT2 Amyloid and Membranous Nephropathy in Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome: A Case Series.” Drs. Grace McNutt and Muhammad Qureshi are his Internal Medicine Faculty co-authors and mentors. Launched in July 2018, the LMC and UIW Primary Care Residency Programs for Internal Medicine and Family Medicine are the city’s first-ever Graduate Medical Education programs. The residency programs are accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
