Laredo Medical Center to Host Fiesta for Stroke Awareness May 5

LAREDO, TX (April 28, 2023) – What happens when you combine a popular Mexican holiday with a national health observance? At Laredo Medical Center, they are having a Cinco de Mayo fiesta for stroke care.
The hospital kicks off its celebration of Stroke Awareness Month with the second annual Fiesta de LMC on Friday, May 5, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the main foyer area. Admission is free and open to the public.
Mexican party decorations will color the hospital lobby, and mariachi music will play in the background during the fiesta. Additionally, guests will be able to enjoy heart-healthy snacks and satisfy their thirst with aguas frescas.
The goal of the community event is to raise awareness about stroke - a serious medical condition - in an interactive and inviting setting.
“Stroke is indeed a serious problem in our country where a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. And the best way to fight and prevent this disease is through education,” says Jorge Leal, FACHE, CEO of Laredo Medical Center. “As the lead Advanced Level III Trauma Facility and a Primary Stroke Center, Laredo Medical Center is committed to deliver quality stroke care, inform the community about stroke prevention and provide them with resources to support stroke survivors and their families. We want the community to know how they can take action and help win this battle.”
Hospital employees from the stroke and ER trauma programs will provide free health screenings for stroke prevention, offer information on stroke care, interactive games and much more. Other featured hospital services will include physical therapy, assessments for sleep disorders, cardiac rehabilitation and primary care.
Chantel Molina, stroke coordinator at Laredo Medical Center, hopes the hospital’s educational efforts make a difference.
“Fiesta de LMC is providing awareness on signs and symptoms of stroke and the importance of calling 911 and receiving emergency medical care without delay for a stroke. Time loss is brain loss. Every second counts to prevent further disability and mortality,” says Molina.
The Laredo Stroke Support Group, a local non-profit, is expected to join the celebration and share information about their services and events. Stroke survivors and their families will be honorary guests of this event.
In 2018, the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association awarded Laredo Medical Center with Accreditation as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. The hospital earned reaccreditation in 2021.
“As an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, Laredo Medical Center is recognized as a leader in stroke care and demonstrating a higher standard of service for stroke patients in its community,” says Leal.
