Laredo Medical Center Celebrates Grand Opening of New Freestanding ER in Southeast Laredo
7/10/2026
On June 25, Laredo Medical Center celebrated the grand opening of its new Laredo Medical Center Buena Vista ER, a freestanding emergency department that expands access to 24/7 emergency care for residents and businesses in southeast Laredo.
Hospital leaders, physicians, clinicians and staff were joined by elected officials, members from the Laredo Fire Department and other key stakeholders for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tours at the new emergency room, located at 4019 Cuatro Vientos Road, near the Buena Vista Sports Complex. The department is expected to begin treating patients during the first week of July.
The opening marks the completion of a project first announced during a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2025, and reflects Laredo Medical Center’s continued commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.
“Today’s celebration is about more than opening a new building—it’s about expanding access to lifesaving emergency care for the people and businesses of southeast Laredo and surrounding communities in Rio Bravo, El Cenizo, Zapata and Hebbronville,” said Jorge Leal, FACHE, chief executive officer of Laredo Medical Center. “As our community continues to grow, we are committed to ensuring families have timely access to high-quality emergency services backed by the full resources of Laredo Medical Center.”
The new 11,206-square-foot facility will operate around the clock and provide full-service emergency care supported by the capabilities of Laredo Medical Center. The health system’s emergency departments–including its main hospital-based emergency department and its freestanding ER in north Laredo–collectively cared for nearly 55,000 patients last year, making it a leading provider of emergency services in the region. The addition of Laredo Medical Center Buena Vista ER expands that network of care and improves access for those in the southern portion of the city.
The facility was designed to provide convenient access to emergency treatment closer to home while maintaining the high standards of care patients expect from Laredo Medical Center.
In addition to increasing access to care, the new emergency room brings advanced capabilities not commonly found in freestanding emergency departments in the area. The facility includes a dedicated trauma room equipped to help stabilize critically injured patients, including access to universal blood products for emergency transfusions when every second counts. In addition, patients will have access to teleneurology services, connecting them with neurological specialists for timely evaluation and treatment of stroke, epilepsy, severe headaches and other neurological conditions. The service helps reduce the need to transfer patients to facilities outside the community whenever appropriate.
“Every aspect of this emergency department was designed with patient care, safety and efficiency in mind,” said Leal. “Whether someone is experiencing a traumatic injury, a serious medical condition or a behavioral health crisis, this facility is equipped to provide rapid assessment, advanced treatment and compassionate care close to home.”
The opening comes as Laredo Medical Center continues to earn recognition for its commitment to quality care and patient safety. The hospital recently received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, the nation’s leading independent watchdog focused on patient safety. The designation reflects excellence in preventing medical errors, injuries and infections.
“This recognition reinforces what our patients and community should expect from us every day—safe, high-quality care delivered by dedicated healthcare professionals,” said Leal. “As we expand emergency services, we are bringing not only greater convenience but also the same commitment to quality, safety and clinical excellence that defines our organization.”
Other features of the new emergency room are:
- Eight private exam rooms, including specialized trauma and OB/isolation rooms;
- Three private triage bays;
- On-site radiology and laboratory services; and
- Care provided by board-certified emergency physicians and skilled LMC clinical staff.
Construction of the facility was managed by Doster Construction.
Following the ribbon-butting, guests were invited to tour the facility and learn more about the services that will be available when the emergency room begins operations.
