Primary Care Associates of Laredo to Offer Free Sports Physicals

LAREDO, TX – Scheduling a sports physical exam is one of the most important things parents can do to make sure their kids are not only ready for a new school year, but for their wellbeing.
In July during select dates, Primary Care Associates of Laredo will offer sports physical exams for school-age children at no cost. Parents are recommended to call (956) 441-0643 to schedule an appointment now as space is limited.
The sports physicals will be offered by Jacob Kallsen, M.D., and Cory Fernandes, D.O., both of whom are board-certified family medicine physicians at Primary Care Associates of Laredo.
“In the midst of buying new clothes and school supplies, parents have a lot to cope with during the back to school season, but making time to schedule a sports physical for your child is the greatest benefit you can offer for your child’s health,” says Dr. Fernandes.
Dr. Kallsen adds, “Sports physicals are a requirement for student athletes, cheerleaders, band members and students in other organizations. But, having an annual physical is also an important part of a child’s health and development, even if your child isn’t involved in a student organization.”
Annual physicals help recognize developing medical issues before they become serious. One example of this is eyesight. Time and again, research has linked poor eyesight with poor performance in the classroom.
“If not addressed, common eye problems that could be easily corrected with glasses or contacts may result in poor grades and classroom frustration,” says Dr. Fernandes.
Another important factor of a physical is to make sure parents are familiar with their child’s health history.
“This way, if the child is admitted to the hospital, the physicians will have valuable insight and supporting medical records that may lead to more informed treatment decisions,” says Dr. Kallsen.
Parents should bring their child’s physical form with the health history section completed and signed. For those who don’t have the form, they can obtain it at the clinic.
In addition, students should bring their prescribed eye glasses or contact lenses, and, if applicable, a clearance letter from their doctor for patients with heart problems, surgeries or fractures within the past year.
Dr. Fernandes and Dr. Kallsen are located at Primary Care Associates of Laredo, 1119 Fenwick Drive, Suite 204.
