Popular Washington’s Birthday Tradition Returns to Laredo Medical Center February 3
1/12/2024
LAREDO, TX – A popular Washington’s birthday tradition that encourages Laredoans of all ages to lace up their running shoes and roll up their sleeves for heart health is returning to Laredo Medical Center and making a comeback in a big way.
The WBCA Founding Fathers’ 5K has been rebranded and reenergized as the Run George Run 5K Run and Walk, which is being organized by the LAREDO ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS, a Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association (WBCA) affiliate.
The race will also feature a free Wellness Fair, courtesy of title sponsor Laredo Medical Center, and many other new, fun and interactive activities for all ages on Saturday, February 3 at the hospital grounds, located at 1700 E. Saunders Street.
The Wellness Fair will be from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the LMC Tower B Rotunda and Community Center. A variety of health screenings and wellness information will be offered free of charge to the runners, walkers and general public. Critical screenings will include cholesterol and glucose, blood pressure, pulmonary function, vision – and, new this year, will be hernia screenings by some of the hospital’s surgeons. Fasting is required for the cholesterol and glucose screenings. The event will also offer Zumba, tai chi and yoga demonstrations, as well as fun and interactive activities.
The 5K Run and Walk will kick off with a group stretch at 7:30 a.m., followed by the run and walk at 8:00 a.m. The 3.1 run/walk is recognized as one of Laredo’s premiere chip-timed 5K events. Early registration is $35/runner. Late registration is $45. To sign up, visit https://rungeorgerun5k.itsyourrace.com/register/ or on-site on the day of the event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Laredo-Webb County.
“Laredo Medical Center is excited to welcome back the 5K run, walk and LMC wellness fair to our hospital campus,” says Jorge Leal, FACHE, chief executive officer. “As the leading healthcare provider in the community, it’s not only our responsibility to take care of patients when they’re ill and needing to be hospitalized, but we welcome the opportunity to promote preventive health and wellness in the community.”
In addition to George Washington’s birthday, February is American Heart Month – and Laredo Medical Center is encouraging everyone to “Leap into Heart Health.”
“Because it’s a leap year, we’re inviting everyone to “Leap into Heart Health” in 2024 by signing up for our special email series on heart health,” says Leal.
Persons who sign up for this free email series will receive short, fun-filled, fact-packed, potentially life-altering emails every other day in February. Laredo Medical Center will be sharing tips to help the community “spring” into action, “skip” past stress, “hop” into bed earlier for better rest, and other small and big “steps” to help improve heart health – hopefully by “leaps and bounds.” Laredo Medical Center will be signing up interested persons at the Run George Run event or you can sign up at LaredoMedical.com/Leap.
