7/28/2020
Laredo Medical Center and its academic partner, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), introduced the third cohort of the LMC Primary Care Residency Programs for Family Medicine and Internal Medicine on July 1.
The third cohort—consisting of 8 Family Medicine Residents and 7 Internal Medicine Residents—were welcomed in a small internal ceremony, each resident was introduced and received their white lab coat to signal their start in the three-year-long residency program.
Launched in July 2018, the LMC Residency programs are the city’s first-ever Graduate Medical Education programs. The new residents join the inaugural class for the 2020-2021 year.
“Laredo Medical Center is excited to welcome and bring these residents onboard,” said Enrique Gallegos, Chief Executive Officer. “Our goal is to recruit the very best residents from each program and support those who choose to stay in Laredo to build their private practice and serve our community.”
Gallegos added that the third cohort of residents includes 1 Laredoan.
“We are pleased that LMC’s Residency Programs are opening a much-needed opportunity for Laredoans to stay closer to home to fulfill their dreams in the medical profession,” Gallegos said.
The residency programs are accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
During the ceremony, UIW officials also introduced 8 medical students from their School of Osteopathic Medicine. These individuals are third-year medical students, performing their clinical rotations for one year at LMC with the potential to later join as residents themselves.
