Laredo Medical Center, Webb County and City of Laredo to Recognize Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day
10/7/2022
Laredo Medical Center will join the board of directors of Casa de Misericordia, along with the Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition and Mercy Ministries of Laredo, at a press conference and proclamation in recognition of National Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day.
Domestic violence is a health care problem of epidemic proportions in Texas and throughout this country. According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, in 2020, law enforcement officers in Texas responded to 218,950 incidents of family violence, a 10% increase from 198,899 incidents in 2019. The National Center for Injury Prevention estimates the cost of intimate partner rape, physical assault and stalking exceeds $5.8 billion each year — nearly $4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services.
Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day is a nationally-recognized, awareness-raising day that aims to reach members of the healthcare and advocacy communities to offer education about the critical importance of universal education to promote healthy relationships, address the health impact of abuse, increase screening for domestic violence and offer warm referrals to domestic violence advocates.
In recognition of the profound physical and mental health effects which domestic violence has on individuals, family members, and communities, Judge Tano Tijerina and Mayor Pete Saenz will be joined by members of the healthcare community to recognize the day and proclaim October 12, 2022, as Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day. The proclamation will take place on October 12, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Casa de Misericordia Education Center at 1000 Mier.
