7/25/2025
Laredo Medical Center invites mothers and mothers-to-be to its fifth annual Breastfeeding Awareness Community Fair on Wednesday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Community Center located in Tower B, first floor, at the hospital campus.
Held in recognition of National Breastfeeding Month, the fair aims to empower and educate families on the lifelong benefits of breastfeeding—for babies, mothers, and entire households. Hosted in collaboration with several local organizations, this free event is open to the public.
“We’re committed to supporting families at every stage of their journey, and that begins with giving babies the healthiest possible start,” said Jorge Leal, FACHE, chief executive officer of Laredo Medical Center. “Our Breastfeeding Awareness Community Fair is one more way we promote education, connection and empowerment for mothers in Laredo and Webb County.”
Attendees will hear inspiring stories from local mothers who will share their personal breastfeeding journeys, and they’ll be able to explore a range of interactive displays and educational activities led by Laredo Medical Center teams, including lactation services, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), trauma, clinical nutrition, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The staff will offer practical guidance and answer questions to help families confidently begin—or continue—their breastfeeding experience.
“Every family’s feeding journey is different, and our goal is to provide guidance and support for those who choose to breastfeed,” said Laura Uribe, MSN, RN, director of women’s services. “This event brings together resources, encouragement, and expert guidance so families feel supported every step of the way—from pregnancy through postpartum and beyond.”
Additional community organizations include City of Laredo Public Health, WIC Program, Texas Nurse-Family Partnership, Healthy Texas Mothers & Babies Program, Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Walmart, Northwestern Mutual, Saladworks, Target, Mother’s Milk Bank at Austin, Texas Department of Transportation and more.
Mothers will also have the opportunity to sign up for LMC’s “Breast Friends” breastfeeding support group and register for a free Breastfeeding Basics class designed especially for expectant moms.
The fair will also feature light refreshments and door prizes, making it both informative and family-friendly.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition. It provides essential nutrients and powerful antibodies that strengthen a baby’s immune system and protect against illnesses. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to develop chronic health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, asthma, and certain cancers.
Breastfeeding also benefits mothers by reducing the risk of breast and ovarian cancers and osteoporosis later in life.
Laredo Medical Center is a Texas Mother-Friendly Gold Worksite, offering workplace support for breastfeeding employees. It is also recognized as a Texas Ten Step facility by Texas Health and Human Services—highlighting its commitment to improving maternity care and supporting breastfeeding success from day one.
