3/8/2024
LAREDO, TX – More than 100 hearts are beating stronger as of February 2023, thanks to the quality care provided by the comprehensive Heart and Vascular Program at Laredo Medical Center.
The Laredo Medical Center Open Heart Program highlighted this significant one-year milestone during their first-ever Appreciation and Recognition Celebration last month.
Members of the Open Heart team were recognized for their commitment to the months of rigorous training they received to provide a specialized service that is greatly needed in our community.
In addition to recognizing their own, the Open Heart team lauded the collaborative efforts of other hospital departments, including ICU, surgery, lab, pharmacy, physical medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, biomed, respiratory, cardiac catheterization (cath) lab, registration, environmental services, medical-surgical units 2C and 2D, as well as marketing.
Furthermore, Ricardo G. Cigarroa, M.D., and Ricardo J. Cigarroa II, M.D., of Cigarroa Surgical Center; and Carlos G. Cigarroa, M.D., of Cigarroa Heart Clinic were recognized for their contributions to the Open Heart Program’s success.
“The future of cardiac care looks bright for Laredo and Webb County,” says Jorge Leal, FACHE, CEO of Laredo Medical Center. “In 2023, we successfully added all the necessary components to provide a well-rounded Heart and Vascular Program that is elevating patient-centered care via advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of heart disease.”
One of those components involved welcoming back Arthur Santos, M.D., FACS, to lead the Open Heart Program. Dr. Santos is board certified in general surgery, critical care and thoracic surgery, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
“We’re not only taking care of the patient. We’re also taking care of the patient’s family,” says Dr. Santos. “We want everyone to be comfortable. Our whole approach is to educate the patient and their family upfront before the patient undergoes the open heart procedure to know what’s going to happen and we can reduce a lot of their anxiety–and I think this is only because of our commitment to service. Our level of service is what differentiates us. When we take care of our patients like our family that’s what differentiates us.”
