Laredo Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of its new Cardiac Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, June 15.
Located at the hospital’s main campus on the first floor of Tower A, the LMC Cardiac Rehabilitation Center is dedicated to helping patients achieve optimum heart health, focusing on individuals who have known heart disease or are at a high risk for heart disease.
“Our vision for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center is to offer an individualized and personalized treatment plan that includes an evaluation and instruction on physical activity, nutrition, stress management and medication management,” said Jorge Leal, FACHE, CEO of Laredo Medical Center. “We are proud to open this brand new facility, which is another major investment we are making to support healthcare in the region, and help people get well and live healthier.”
The program serves patients recovering from a heart attack, bypass surgery, stent placement, stable angina, valve replacement or other cardiac illnesses.
Participants are monitored with telemetry equipment as they exercise on treadmills, stationary bicycles, rowers and other exercise equipment. Cardiac Rehab technicians check blood pressure before, during and after exercise to help ensure a safe and effective workout.
Throughout the 12-week sessions patients are educated on medications, diet modification, smoking cessation and on risk factors that lead to coronary artery disease. Staff also monitors and helps patients gain better control of blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet and share stories with other patients with similar conditions. Patients can expect comprehensive communication with their doctors and other healthcare providers about their progress following a cardiac event.
The LMC Cardiac Rehabilitation program requires a physician’s referral, and staff can assist patients with obtaining an order. Cardiac rehabilitation is covered by most health insurance plans. The sessions are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 12 weeks and generally last an hour.
