Overview
The Laboratory at Laredo Medical Center is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and offers full service for all product lines.
A large menu of general clinical testing for chemistry, special chemistry, hematology, coagulation and urinalysis is available 24 hours per day. Full laboratory automation was installed in 2006, which ensures maintenance of specimen integrity throughout the testing process and accuracy of results at each step. STAT testing is available and routine testing is normally completed within 4 hours of specimen receipt. Next-day turnaround time service is available for physician office patients and clinics.
The Laboratory has the only full-service microbiology section within 150 miles. The section offers routine bacterial cultures from any source, but also specialized cultures for TB, yeast, fungi and others. Microbiology also performs sensitivity testing against a variety of antibiotics.
The Transfusion Services (Blood Bank) section provides blood products for inpatient needs, but is also a source of blood services for outpatients needing transfusion or therapeutic phlebotomy. It is the only transfusion service in Laredo capable of identifying several antibodies, which can be a large benefit for obstetric patients and those who receive transfusions on a regular basis. This section also performs testing and provides product for Rh-negative mothers and their newborns.
Pathology is a one-stop service for all cytology and histology needs. All staining and testing is performed under the guidance of an experienced and knowledgeable pathologist. State-of-the-art testing using immunohistochemical tests is available to make the best and most definitive diagnosis. Some specialized reporting is also available for some tissue testing, to aid the clinician in the management of his patient.
As well as providing service for hospital inpatients, specimens can be collected and/or dropped off at several locations. Courier service is available to many physician offices, so specimens collected there - for any of the specialized services mentioned above - can be transported to the hospital. All testing is performed at the hospital laboratory.
